Music Together Big Kids®

Your 5-, 6-, or 7-year-old is developing quickly and exploring new activities, mastering new skills, and gaining independence. As a parent, you may be making choices about extracurricular activities that complement their new school experiences and support their growth—in music and in life. The Music Together Big Kids program helps your child take the next step in music development by blending the elements of Music Together® that parents and children love with new activities, skills, and challenges that are developmentally appropriate for 5- through 7-year- old children.

As you may know, Music Together mixed-age classes support the development of tonal and rhythm competency, family music making and the disposition to be life-long music makers for infants through 4-year-old children. Big Kids classes focus on Basic Music Literacy, laying the foundation for formal music instruction in school or in private instrument lessons, as well as a lifetime of joyful music making.

At Music Together, we recognize your older child's new capabilities and provide a developmentally appropriate curriculum that includes solfege, instrumental solos and ensembles, choreography, harmony singing, vocal development, and drumming skills. The Big Kids  classroom is a safe, familiar, fun environment where your child can experiment with new musical activities like conducting and improvisation, story songs, "silly operas," and game songs.

Parent participation is the hallmark of the Music Together program, but many children of this age are ready for more independence in the classroom, so parent attendance in each Big Kids class is welcome but not required (except for the first class). You and your child will receive a songbook, CD, and HomePlay activities so that the entire family can continue the fun and learning at home and you can stay connected with what your child is learning in class.

Music Together Big Kids Classes

-Classes are 60 minutes long and meet weekly for ten weeks.

Show classes for:
Pre-Rhythm Kids (4,5yr olds)

PreRhythm Kids™ with Music Together Song Collections (ages 4-5 w/ parent or caregiver)

PreRhythm Kids is geared for preschoolers who are ready to take their next music step. Utilizing the Music Together curriculum each week, we drum sing, dance, play instruments and begin to play music-based games. PreRhythm Kids guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative as they make up their own drumming patterns, invent new ways to play rhythm instruments, create movement ideas for songs and even take a drum solo! Families also get access to the online Family Music Zone with great in-home ideas and videos. A variety of drums will be provided for the class.

This is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age five through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers—grouping children of a variety of ages because this fosters natural, family-style learning. Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because the children in the family can go to class together. Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers—parents, grandparents, nanny—can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Guitar Class for Grownups

Guitar Classes for Grownups

In order to help parents/caregivers learn their child’s favorite Music Together songs on the guitar, there’s a guitar program for adults. This program is offered exclusively to families whose children are enrolled in one or more Midcoast Music Together’s classes and to preschool teachers whose classes are enrolled in Music Together Preschool. In class, students learn basic beginner guitar concepts, including simplified chording, so that they may accompany themselves and their families as soon as possible.

Classes are 60 minutes long and meet once weekly for 8 weeks in the fall, winter, and spring; guitar classes are not offered during the summer. Students must bring their own guitar, capo, and current semester songbook.

Music Together® Guitar Class for Grownups! STARTS TUESDAY JANUARY 26, 2016.

The class is open to parents and caregivers of children registered (and pre-k teachers) in the WINTER 2016 "DRUMS Collection" semester. If you would like to learn to play guitar using Music Together songs as the vehicle, this is the class for you!

Participants will learn basic strums and chords for more than a dozen songs from the current Music Together song collection. This class is designed for beginners who have never held a guitar-and for people who know a just a little guitar!
